About 529 College Savings Plans

529 plans are tax-advantaged savings vehicles designed specifically for education expenses. Contributions grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free when used for qualified education expenses, which include tuition, fees, books, supplies, and room and board at eligible institutions.

There are two main types of 529 plans: prepaid tuition plans and education savings plans. Prepaid plans allow you to purchase credits at participating colleges at today's rates, while savings plans are investment accounts that offer various investment options.

Each state sponsors at least one 529 plan, but you're not limited to your home state's plan. It's important to compare plans across states, as they differ in terms of investment options, fees, minimum contributions, and state tax benefits. Some states offer tax deductions or credits for contributions to their own 529 plans.
